Initiatives should include collaboration between Porirua City Council (PCC), community groups, environmental organisations, schools, kura and Ngāti Toa, ensuring a kaitiakitanga approach.
Integrating traditional ecological knowledge and community-led restoration, Porirua will foster a greener, healthier, more fireresistant future, while strengthening cultural and environmental connections
Restore waterways & integrate nature-based solutions
Increase resourcing, support and visibility of native afforestation initiatives that focus on restoring indigenous ecosystems, enhancing biodiversity, and improving environmental resilience (example: Ngahere Korowai)
Investigate opportunities to incentivise private landowners to encourage native afforestation, e.g. carbon credits, regenerative planting for all new developments, converting deforested land into native bush.
