Climate Change
Learning to live in Porirua’s changing world together.
How do we connect and respond as our climate changes?
In early 2025, Porirua came together to ask a shared question: how do we connect and respond as our climate changes? Over five days, more than 100 Porirua locals took part in the Porirua Assembly — a community-led process designed to bring diverse voices together to grapple with complex challenges. The Assembly was made up of three rōpū: mana whenua, Porirua residents randomly selected to reflect the city’s demographics, and tamariki and rangatahi whose futures will be most shaped by the decisions we make today. Participants heard from local experts and knowledge holders on climate science, indigenous knowledge, hazard mapping, and the realities facing Porirua as extreme weather events become more frequent and severe. Together, they worked through the evidence, shared lived experience, and explored what resilience could look like for our city.
Recommendations
The Porirua Assembly on Climate produced six overarching recommendations, supported by practical ideas and pathways for action. The recommendations have been presented to Porirua City Council. Greater Wellington Region Council and the Porirua’s Community Leaders’ Forum for action. We also have many local initiatives already underway. We encourage you to support this mahi, start something new, and share it with us so we can help promote it across Porirua.
